Reconciling Supply of and Demand for Research in the Science of Science and Innovation Policy May 12 - 14 2009 Oslo, Norway.

"This U.S. - Norwegian workshop will bring together academics, practitioners, and those with feet in both worlds to examine how science policy research does (or does not) support the information needs of science policy decision makers, and steps that might be taken to improve such connections."

International Peer Review Workshop organized by the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, May 20-22, 2009.

Hosted by the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies, this workshohp aims to facilitate the exchange of information and share experiences among funding agencies relating to their respective peer review processes. The process of peer review relating to scholarly journals is also an issue that will be explored.

Research Funding and the Good Life co-sponsored by CEPTES, at the University of Twente (NL), March 17-18, 2009.

Made possible by a CSID financial contribution from its CAPR project, and co-organized by CSID director Robert Frodeman, this meeting was held to examine differences between US and EU/Dutch ways of assessing the broader impacts of science and technology. Issues explored include: (1) how 'broader impacts' or 'societal relevance" is understdood, and (2) what role a funding institutions could have in realizing a reflective scientific practice.

Making Sense of the "Broader Impacts" of Science and Technology held at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, August 2007.

This workshop, made possible by an NSF grant with CSID Assistant Director Britt Holbrook, and Director Robert Frodeman as PI and Co-Pi respectively, focused on issues surrounding NSF's broader impacts merit review criterion. Specifically, it aimed to reflect on why (rather than how) scientists and engineers ought to address the broader impacts of their research.

Space Science, Environmental Ethics, and Policy a workshop at NASA Ames, April 12-14, 2007.

Funded through NSF's Social and Economic Sciences Program, "Ethics and Values in Science, Engineering, and Technology," this workshop was held to examine issues lying at the intersection of space science, environmental ethics, and policy.

International Workshop on Integrating Ecological Science and Environmental Ethics, held in southern Chile, March 2007.

Co-organized by the University of North Texas (UNT) and the Chilean Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity (IEB), this international workshop aimed (1) to better understand the challenges of managing frontier ecosystems, especially in Chile; and (2) to improve skills at interdisciplinary problem solving.

Cities and Rivers II New Orleans, the Mississippi Delta, and Katrina, held in New Orleans March 2006.
Organized by New Directions, Cities and Rivers II aimed to build on previous New Directiosn efforts to promote the integration of ethics and values concerns with scientific and technical knowledge to address pressing societal issues. Specifically this workshop focused on the environmental and societal challenges surrounding New Orleans/Mississippi Delta in the wake of Hurricaine Katrina.

"Cities and Rivers: Interdisciplinary and International Perspectives" held in St. Petersburg, Russia the summer of 2004.

Cities and Rivers, organized by New Directions, was geared towards developing new models for interdisciplinary collaborations on issues at the intersection of science and society. More specifically this workshop examined the Neva River and the complex interrelations between scientific and societal aspects of the challenges facing the Neva river, and urban rivers worldwide.
